Swim Team 101

Welcome to Mohican Swim! We’re so glad you’re here.

Our swim team is a fun, supportive community for kids ages 4–18 to build skills, make friends, and be part of something special. Led by Head Coach Kevin Wagman and an awesome group of coaches, our focus is simple: help kids grow as swimmers while having a great time doing it.

A typical season includes:

  • Practices
  • Meets (both fun and competitive)
  • Social events
  • Lots of team spirit

Let’s break it down 👇

🏊 Practices

Practices are flexible and designed to fit busy summer schedules.

  • Before school ends: afternoon practices
  • After school ends: both morning and afternoon options

👉 Check the full schedule here: Team Practice Schedule

Good to know:

  • Daily attendance is not required
  • Some swimmers come every day, others a few times a week
  • Come when you can—consistency helps, but flexibility is built in

🎉 Fun Stuff (Yes, This Is Important)

Swimming is only part of the experience!

Pep Rallies

Held most Friday nights before A meets, these are high-energy, kid-favorite events with games, cheers, and lots of fun.

End-of-Season Banquet

A celebration for the whole family to wrap up the season, recognize achievements, and relive the highlights.

🧪 Getting Started: Evaluations & Time Trials

Pre-Season Evaluations (8 & Under)

If your swimmer is 8 or younger and:

  • New to Mohican, or
  • Has only been on pre-team

They’ll attend a quick in-water evaluation so we can place them in the right group.

Placement basics:

  • Not yet swimming a full lap? → Pre-Team
  • Comfortable with freestyle + another stroke? → Swim Team (Meet Team)

Placement isn’t permanent—kids move up as they improve!

Time Trials

This is our first “practice meet” of the season where swimmers get their initial times recorded.

  • Helps coaches build lineups
  • Gives swimmers a feel for meets
  • No pressure—just getting started

🙌 Volunteering (A Big Part of the Team)

Swim team runs on parent support—and it’s actually a great way to get involved.

  • Families are expected to help throughout the season
  • A good rule of thumb: volunteer at meets where your swimmer is participating

👉 Full details here: Volunteer Requirements & Roles

Bonus: It’s one of the best ways to meet people and feel part of the team.

📣 Staying in the Loop

We try to make this easy:

  • 📧 Weekly emails with updates and schedules
  • 🐦 Twitter for real-time updates (weather, changes, etc.)
  • 📅 Swimtopia for meet sign-ups and event details

🏁 Meets 101

Mohican is part of the Montgomery County Swim League (MCSL)—about 90 teams across 15 divisions.

For Summer 2026, we’ll be competing in Division B.

The season runs:

  • Practices: mid-May → mid-July
  • Meets: early June → late July

🤝 One Team, Two Types of Meets

We are one team, and all swimmers practice together—but there are two types of meets:

🏆 A Meets (Saturdays)

  • Division competitions
  • Lineups set by coaches based on times, availability, and event rules
  • Results count toward team standings

🌊 B Meets (Wednesdays)

  • Fun, low-pressure meets with a neighboring pool
  • Open to all swimmers and highly encouraged
  • Focus: improving times and gaining experience

👉 If your swimmer is new, B meets are the perfect place to start.

🧠 How A Meet Lineups Work (Quick Version)

Coaches create lineups each week based on:

  • Swimmer times
  • Age group + gender
  • Event limits and availability

A few key points:

  • Lineups usually go out by Thursday
  • Swimmers must confirm availability earlier in the week
  • If a swimmer can’t attend after being selected, it’s important to notify coaches ASAP

🏊 What Do Swimmers Actually Swim?

Events include:

  • Freestyle
  • Backstroke
  • Breaststroke
  • Butterfly
  • Individual Medley (IM)

In IM, swimmers do all four strokes in order:
Fly → Back → Breast → Free

⭐ Beyond Regular Meets

There are also some special meets throughout the season:

  • Relay Carnival – fast-paced, all relays, super fun
  • Divisionals – end-of-season championship meet
  • All Stars – countywide meet for top swimmers
  • Coaches Long Course – mid-season elite meet
